Celebrity Playlist - NQ Arbuckle

Like many great musicians, NQ Arbuckle's songs don't find easy classification by genre. Is it roots rock? Is it country? Is it folk? Does it matter? His impressive debut, Hanging the Battle Scarred Pinata, produced by Luke Doucet, moves between quiet beauty and raucous round ups with tunes such as Mixkin' Dancehall Blues and In Another Time. NQ's newest release, The Last Supper In A Cheap Town continues up the trail of late night images and lovely musicianship. Have a listen to Cheap Town, and when you're done take a stroll through some of the songs that make up his personal hit list...

NQ Arbuckle - Top 12

A Letter to Heather - Justin Rutledge: "This is a beautiful love song. If you put this on and lip synch to your girlfriend ... make-out city. It is always nice to hear that O'Hara woman sing again."

Amsterdam - Jacques Brel: "I think that I have listened to this song and his 'Le Plat Pays' about 80,000 times. Genius, man."

Copied Keys - Kathleen Edwards: "I love every song she has written, and I think that both her records are flawless."

Dark Center of the Universe - Modest Mouse: "First of all, they are not very modest. I don't think this CD is as good as the Lonesome West one, but this is a great song, and like most of their songs, it makes me want to drink pints and behave badly. I think Bright Eyes might owe an apology to Modest Mouse."

Ed's Song - Richard Buckner: "'For once devotion is enough' - The hope of every drinker in a relationship. Ye Gods what a good song! Might I also recommend: everything else he has ever recorded."

Invitation to the Blues - Tom Waits: "There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of the girl that gave me my first copy of Small Change."

Light Enough to Travel - The Be Good Tanya's: "Geoff Berner wrote this song, and I recommend that you check out all his other numbers (which I'm sure you can find on the web). The Be Good Tanya's are a goddam world class act, and I often find myself singing this one as I bicycle home from some world class event. 'Dog Song 2' is my second fave (from their last album).

London You're a Lady - The Pogues: "Ah Shane, we hardly knew ye. It's only the belief that we will all be drinking buddies in Hell that makes this life bearable."

New Orleans - Luke Doucet: "Killer song. I think Doucet is a goddamn national treasure. I also highly recommend searching out his Embattled Heart CD (in the Veal section of your record store), which contains the song "Toothbrush," which (for some reason) I think is one of the sexiest songs written by a Canadian."

Sergeant Kraulis - Martin Tielli: "Whenever I find myself after a few beers and alone, I often sing one of the lines from this song (for instance ... my fave ... "I was way the hell off duty") and it makes me feel like Serpico for the rest of the day."

The Sorrowful Wife - Nick Cave: "I met him once while I was stealing a beer out of his rider in Toronto (he did not find it funny). A scary man yeah."

Your Beauty Must Be Rubbing Off - Hawksley Workman: "I remember being in Ottawa having a smoke outside a bar, and watching 4 girls dance, sing along, and lose their minds to this song."
